What it Means to be an Ally
It’s not about doing the right thing, it’s about becoming the right thing. It’s not about checking boxes, it’s about humanity. It’s not about showing up right now because everyone else is, this isn’t a fucking trend. This is something to carry on and live by.
Show up now and continue to show up. In the pursuit of fighting against racism, you must be an ally and that means to take ongoing action.
Here are ways to take action now and moving forward:
Watch documentaries, shows, read books, articles, and listen to stories from marginalized folks. Absorb anything that helps you bring awareness to your privilege and illuminates oppression and the systems that perpetuate racism. Educate yourself.
Take a look at your own internalized racism and question how you might be inadvertently contributing.⠀
Have uncomfortable conversations. Call people out. Call yourself out.
Listen more. Hold space. Sit with black people’s experience without giving an opinion, without whitesplaining. Simply empathize.
Send money. Donate. Support black business. Practice conscious consumerism.
Scheme up ways you can continue to take action moving forward.
⠀
If you see this and you haven’t done anything yet, this is your invitation and your push to BE BETTER. Comment back and tell me one way to plan to take action this week.
