Stop with the Fat-Phobic Memes

YOUR FAT-PHOBIC MEMES ARE HARMFUL, NOT FUNNY 🗣
â €
At face value, it might come off as innocuous and okay. The intent of it was to create laughter during a time of suffering, right?
â €
Below the surface, however, there’s far more to it. Words and the meaning behind those words are powerful and if not used carefully, insidious.
â €
What are we really saying when we crack jokes about weight gain?
â €
It perpetuates fat-phobia.
It feeds into the erroneous notion that fat bodies are bad bodies.
It reinforces the idea that gaining weight is inherently wrong and unhealthy (which is not always the case—and in this case, it’s your body protecting you).
It enables eating disorders, body dysmorphia, inequality, and feelings of unworthiness.
â €
These memes have damaging ramifications and need to stop. Making fun of people’s bodies is disgusting, not funny. Enough.
